ENJOYING THE OLD AGE

ENJOYING OLD AGE
Some say it old
age, others say it is the ripe age but I stress it is the right age. No matter, with as much ill comforts, little
ailments with neat habits and diligent
practices you can overcome any difficulties and enjoy the richness of
life. I have decided to start loving my
semi- retired life fully with practices I make my habits in the remaining period of my
life. The practices I would like to follow
are:
1
Exhaustive reading both newspaper articles, book of
fiction (then and now)
2
Jotting down important points coming across in the old
unused diaries
3
Regular light exercise like walking, shopping and
gardening etc
4
Keeping engaged in kitchen services
5
Trying hand in experiments in light dishes that suit
your appetite
6
Light diet with smoking and drinking holiday
7
Engaging in part-time job services of your past
experience
8
Keeping socially engaged with old friends and
colleagues
9
Keeping away from fresh investments, purchases and
income generating/loosing adventures
10
Morally supporting your children
11
Evening prayer and a good night sleep
12
Amicable relationship with your life partner
Writing my
experiences in life was my ambition right from my college days when I had
dreamt of becoming a writer. As time
passed these ideas faded away and now it is limited to writing a blog which I
have started two months back after seeing many bloggers in “The Hindu”. Shiv Viswanathan, Suhasini Haider, Vidya Ram,
Rohan Premkumar, A S Panneerselvam are some of my favourite bloggers. I have also started spending money on new
books of my favourite writers like Paulo Coelho, Danielle Steel, Chetan Bhagat.
Wherever mention of new writers are there in the magazines depending on the
review the names are noted in the ‘to be bought’ list in the diaries. Another
interesting reading column in the Hindu is the short write up about Economics,
Politics and Finance where old luminaries are illustrated in the present
context.
If the night sleep
was on time, as mostly won’t be due to late night arrival of Johny after the recent
promotion. Arriving late after office and personal engagements, keeping awake
till mid night and beyond, sleeplessness after the usual bedtime, makes the start up drowsy. A full glass of
fresh filtered water before and after bed makes system cooling always. Goes out for buying of milk, dividing into three cups for pre heating in
the micro wave oven mixed with freshly ground pepper and a pinch of cardamom without sugar is the next in take. While my wife is busy in preparing breakfast
and take away lunch for Johny, I will be attending the cleaning of up-stair
house or cleaning the car from dust and mud of previous day. Breakfast menu may change depending on the
availability of the ground wet flour, but the take away lunch consists of 5 chapatis
and side dish. Mini side dish consist of
cut vegetables or fruits. The side dish
for chapatis would consist of egg onion
masala, potato curry, paneer capsicum,
chicken gravy or chow-chow masala distributed each day.
After seeing off
Johny by opening the gate signalling the inflow of traffic of school goers the
reading chair and writing table will be placed in the portico for reading news
paper. After scanning the important
headlines announcement will come for the breakfast time. Will
complete breakfast in the company of my best half again I will go back
to the unfinished task of reading news paper articles. Hindu crossword was a favourite test vocabulary
building exercise earlier. Now it has
become more tiring and time consuming and hence gave
up trying it. Editorial and letters to
the editor are my favourite two segments in the paper. Next goes to articles written by favourite
bloggers.
On the writing pad,
a pen yellow highlighter and the diary will be placed for keeping note of
important words, sentences or quotes.
These quotes are an important link for my vocabulary and computing of
sentences. On the writing table I used
to keep two additional books; one relating to unfinished fiction I am reading
now and another personality development workbook of either Napoleon Hill or
Robin Sharma. When I get bored with the
articles in the Hindu I will turn to fiction or the other
book. But I will never forget to note
important quotes from either of them.
Reading continuously makes me drowsy, at that time enter kitchen to make
a lemon juice with less salt in hot water.
This exercise will re energise me a little to continue what I have been
doing before. Going through WhatsApp
messages from friends group was another important task which I am thinking of
curtailing due to not so palatable gossips and one sided opinions about the
political situation in the country.
Lunch will be ready sharp at 12.00 noon. For the sake of not rushing for food
immediately will wait for a little more time for lunch. Immediately after lunch it time for an
afternoon nap which has become an important luxury in my day to day activities.
A two hour nap and
a shower in cold water makes the evening fresh again. Black tea without sugar and two biscuits or
some other snacks makes the evening to rejuvenate further. Viewing the email messages for the day,
replying to important messages or deleting the unwanted junk mails will take a
little evening time, and again I go back to the books till late night. In between I will find time for family
prayers and dinner. Family prayer is between
me and my wife with a rosary, two bible reading and prayer for intentions. Video chat with Tina is another important
activity in the evening and it happens after 8.00 and may go for an hour or so
depending on the mood of Aarya and Ananya.
Sound of car arrival will sound by Johny and I will run to open the
door.
Todays activity is
over…. Good Night…….
